6 of the best games for survival

Survival has become a central issue in video games over the last few years. Staying alive is part of the DNA of gaming forever, but recently we have seen everywhere from the survivalist elements Tomb Raider and our latest Far Cry 3: huddling around a fire, fighting, hunting, scavenging for resources and making tools than you.

Survival games has always had a fascination for me, ever since I read Robinson Crusoe when I was little. The idea of her own, bring a living from the land and exploration, from what you might find out there, it's the perfect premise for a game. The first game I ever played was survival survival kids, a little 2D game boy color title for a castaway kid. (It was actually quite dark — only 10 of the child and his family drowns in wreck, straight. Hardcore). Today there is a greater selection, most of them will be released in the last few years.

If you had your appetite for ferocity that opened, say ornaments survival of Tomb Raider, we present six of the best pure survival games out there.

Reliable, I understand that there are still some people in the world who haven't played Minecraft. This may, perhaps, be because they don't know it's a game of survival. I didn't know until 2010, when I started playing it and realized that it wasn't digital Lego, is a castaway game where you are alone in a huge Island unexplored and must make your own. At least, that's the way I play. Minecraft can be almost anything you like, but for me it's about hiding in the night, conquering the elements and venturing into the wilderness. It is also what started the current trend of incorporating elements of survival in almost anything.

In your only Miasmata on an island that overflows from medicinal plants, has been dogged by a deadly plague that can be cured only investigating them-so it's a game of survival at two levels. This punishment (which is a bit of a theme in this list)-injury and fever make it difficult to haul yourself even around the island, and the wild animals are not friendly. Based on your intelligence and willpower. One of the advantages of Miasmata is the atmosphere-jungle is rich, but the night is scary, and you're always aware that a slip or get strayed could set you back away, or even rolling down the side of a mountain. No other game in the world ever will make you very happy to find a flower.

I love games that will tell you exactly what is in the title. The irony, though, is that they will eventually starve in this stylised Gothic nightmare – but before you do, you may spend days stripping wilderness resources and many nights huddled around a fire pit to hide from the monsters, crafting fantastic machines and slowly to unlock new strange tools to assist your survival. Strangely it has rhythm, not to starve, and involves a lot of monotony, but it also captures a primal terror of the darkness that is an essential element for the survival of authentic games.

The Lost blue in series is what eventually became those old games Game Boy Color survival kids-there were 3 games for DS, and one for the Wii. None of them were loved by critics, but I liked it anyway. I love them for hardship, embarrassment, their heart. Lost in blue 2 was one of the first games to make me cry, no joke. Lost in blue 2, playing one of the two teenage survivors, a girl or a boy, and do your best to keep both of you alive. You can explore the island by yourself and together, initially scrabbling the sand for edible shellfish to keep body and soul together, later cooking up feasts of island fruits and produce. The goal is to find your way home.

The main problem with lost in blue is that it is very difficult and reluctant to give you any help, which both make a realistic depiction of what it might be like to have to survive on a desert island and an infuriating game video. I have yet to meet anyone who successfully killed a deer with a spear lost in blue. But if you get into this so rewarding, and various endings have real emotional power. At one, I managed to get two of us from the island on a boat, but not have a flare to send when the boat went past. Two characters died caught. I was devastated.

Rust is like a slightly shonky combination DayZ and Minecraft craftsmanship and with combat. Is nowhere near finished yet, and so it's a little difficult to set up, but the beta version of rust has fascinated by us here at IGN so far. Is a multiplayer sim, survival where the main danger is not so much the environment as you share with other people. Players band together to form gangs, hunting for resources and stragglers either intake or mission, building towers and villages by what they find. Die and respawn naked with nothing but a rock in your hands. You haven't felt true fear until you are naked in the middle of a forest, huddled by a campfire and hoping not to be detected by bears, zombies or other people.

The original fallout doesn't really give you a choice when it came to survival. Made you die all the time-from the rays, giant mutant Radscorpions, from breaking a leg, from running out of ammunition. Press the foot into the wasteland was a huge risk. There are no fires or shooting, but the cloud still feels like a game of survival for me. Fallout new Vegas, however, took it to the next level with the horribly-named Hardcore Mode, which plays more like a simulation: you need to find clean water, heal injuries over time, stay away from radiation, sleeping properly and make sure to eat regularly. Played normally, however, never go hungry or thirsty, and can roam the wasteland for days without sleep. I lasted approximately four hours in hardcore mode of Fallout NV. Not the kind. Indeed, on this difficulty setting, this may be the hardest game of survival.
