Ubisoft has announced a new title that will bring the seaborne action of the Assassin's Creed series to mobile devices. Assassin's Creed: Pirates will star a young captain who is neither Assassin nor Templar, but will cross paths with both.

As Captain Alonzo Batilla, players will have command of a ship and crew. Gameplay focuses on real-time battles between ships. The title is in 3D and features both wind and weather that will have an impact on how players proceed.

Assassin's Creed: Pirates will be coming later this year. No platforms or business model have been confirmed.

Our Take
It's likely that Assassin's Creed: Pirates will not be a free-to-play game. In other announcements made today, Ubisoft has made it clear when titles will be available for no up-front cost.

The naval combat of Assassin's Creed III and, even more so, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag have been huge selling points. If Ubisoft manages to distill that successfully, Pirates could be an engaging experience. I'm looking forward to trying it for myself.
